Opening a File Is Not the Same as Editing It
A program can sometimes display or import a file without preserving the structure that created it. A vector illustration may become rasterized. Text may no longer be editable. A layered design may arrive as a single flattened image.
That is why our compatibility reports treat Open and Edit as separate questions.

The Extension Is Only Part of the Story
Two files with the same extension can behave differently depending on how they were created. Compatibility may also depend on the application version, operating system, codecs, embedded resources and the features stored inside the file.
Some formats are native to an application while others are only imported or converted.
Layers, vector objects, formulas, metadata and other structures may not transfer between applications.
Missing fonts or linked assets can change the appearance of an otherwise supported file.
Video, image and document support can depend on installed components or software versions.
