Can GIMP Open HEIC Files?
Compatibility information for .HEIC files in GIMP.
Yes. GIMP can open .HEIC files.
Opening support and editing support are evaluated separately because a file can load successfully without remaining fully editable.
Using .HEIC files in GIMP
GIMP can open .HEIC files and supports meaningful editing. Individual file properties can still behave differently, so review the preservation results below.
Recommended Method
Open the .HEIC directly in GIMP, edit it as a normal raster image, and use Export As to create a new .HEIC. Use a GIMP installation whose libheif dependency includes HEVC decoding and encoding.
Compatibility Notes
GIMP officially supports HEIC import and export using libheif. HEIC images can be edited as normal raster content and exported again with configurable compression and bit depth. Layers and fonts are not normally applicable to HEIC image files, and exact preservation of every HEIC property or transparency behavior is not guaranteed.
Compatibility is more than a yes or no
A file may open successfully while losing editable structure. Our reports separate basic opening support from editing behavior and preservation of relevant file properties.
