Can Adobe Illustrator Open PDF Files?
Compatibility information for .PDF files in Adobe Illustrator.
Yes. Adobe Illustrator can open .PDF files.
Opening support and editing support are evaluated separately because a file can load successfully without remaining fully editable.
Using .PDF files in Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator can open .PDF files directly, but editing is limited. Some original structure or file properties may not remain fully editable after import.
Recommended Method
Use File > Open and select the required pages in PDF Import Options. For reliable round-trip editing, create the PDF in Illustrator using Illustrator Default or enable Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities.
Compatibility Notes
Illustrator natively opens, places, and saves PDF files, including selected ranges from multipage PDFs. Generic PDFs are editable, but original Illustrator structure is not guaranteed. Full-fidelity reopening requires Illustrator editing data saved inside the PDF. Layers depend on the PDF version and creation settings. Missing fonts may be substituted, affecting text appearance and editing. Live transparency is retained in PDF 1.4 or later with appropriate settings; PDF 1.3 transparency is flattened and cannot be restored. Oversized PDF pages may exceed Illustrator’s available canvas.
Compatibility is more than a yes or no
A file may open successfully while losing editable structure. Our reports separate basic opening support from editing behavior and preservation of relevant file properties.
