Can Adobe Photoshop Open PDF Files?
Compatibility information for .PDF files in Adobe Photoshop.
Yes. Adobe Photoshop can open .PDF files.
Opening support and editing support are evaluated separately because a file can load successfully without remaining fully editable.
Using .PDF files in Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop can open .PDF files directly, but editing is limited. Some original structure or file properties may not remain fully editable after import.
Recommended Method
Use File > Open, select the required PDF pages or images, and choose appropriate rasterization dimensions and resolution. To retain scalable source content within a Photoshop document, use File > Place Embedded to place a PDF page as a Smart Object.
Compatibility Notes
Photoshop natively opens PDF files and can import selected pages or embedded images. Generic PDF pages are rasterized into pixel documents, so text, vectors, page structure, and source layers are not normally available as independent editable elements. Placed PDF pages become Smart Objects but are rasterized for Photoshop rendering. PDFs originally saved by Photoshop with Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities can retain editable Photoshop layers. Output quality depends on the chosen rasterization resolution, scaling, and color settings.
Compatibility is more than a yes or no
A file may open successfully while losing editable structure. Our reports separate basic opening support from editing behavior and preservation of relevant file properties.
