Can Adobe Illustrator Open PSD Files?
Compatibility information for .PSD files in Adobe Illustrator.
Yes. Adobe Illustrator can open .PSD files.
Opening support and editing support are evaluated separately because a file can load successfully without remaining fully editable.
Using .PSD files in Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator can open .PSD files directly, but editing is limited. Some original structure or file properties may not remain fully editable after import.
Recommended Method
In Adobe Illustrator, use File > Open and select “Convert Photoshop Layers to Objects and Make Text Editable Where Possible.” Embed rather than link when direct editing inside Illustrator is required.
Compatibility Notes
Illustrator natively opens and places PSD files. It can preserve substantial layer structure, masks, transparency and editable text, but only where Illustrator supports the Photoshop content. Unsupported adjustment layers, effects, blending behavior, clipping-mask structures and some transparency combinations may be merged or rasterized to preserve appearance. Flattening retains visual appearance and opacity but removes layer-level editing. Linked PSD artwork is not directly editable. Editable text also depends on successful conversion and font availability.
Compatibility is more than a yes or no
A file may open successfully while losing editable structure. Our reports separate basic opening support from editing behavior and preservation of relevant file properties.
